Our Four Pillars

The initial focus of the New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF) is to provide resources to initiatives and nonprofit organizations effectively supporting Black and Brown communities in the following areas: (1) Policing & Criminal Justice Reform; (2) Economic Empowerment; (3) Health Care Equity; and (4) Youth Education, Empowerment & Civic Engagement. Specific funding decisions are made by representatives from the NCF’s core leadership group.

POLICING & CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

The NCF supports community groups and coalitions across the Commonwealth that work to reduce inequities in policing and the criminal justice system.

These are groups and coalitions that help create policing policies and practices that result in greater police accountability and equitable outcomes, work to eliminate the school-to-prison pipeline and the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people, and invest in social systems that promote public safety, offer domestic violence training and support mental health workers.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

The NCF supports community groups and coalitions that work to improve the economic equity of Black and Brown communities in the Commonwealth.

The NCF is seeking groups that promote economic empowerment and equity by helping Black and Brown communities, organizations and individuals develop and implement effective asset building and wealth creation strategies, helping business enterprises discourage racial inequities in recruitment, employment and promotion, and helping business enterprises that reduce the economic vulnerability of Black and Brown families across the Commonwealth.

HEALTH CARE EQUITY

The NCF supports community groups, particularly Black and Brown-led, across the Commonwealth that work towards improving health equity of Black and Brown communities.

These community groups are focused on increasing positive health conditions, increasing equitable access to health care resources, improving health outcomes in Black and Brown communities, decreasing racial disparities in health outcomes, increasing health literacy of Black and Brown communities, and increasing Black and Brown professionals in health care in the Commonwealth.

YOUTH EDUCATION, EMPOWERMENT & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The NCF supports community groups and coalitions that work to eliminate inequities and increase youth empowerment and civic engagement in Black and Brown communities across the Commonwealth.

The NCF is seeking groups that promote youth education, empowerment and civic engagement by working to: eliminate policies and practices that systematically curtail voter rights and suppress civic engagement in Black and Brown communities, improve education outcomes and learning environments for Black and Brown youth, end discriminatory and punitive school disciplinary practices that disproportionately affect Black and Brown youth, and increase opportunities for youth engagement and leadership in Black and Brown communities.
